Who We Are Serving

OUR VETERANS

  • Substance use disorder, along with PTSD, are two of the five most common mental health disorders impacting homeless veterans today, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Without the proper support, they are much more likely to end up on the street, which can worsen their substance abuse and other mental health conditions.

  • Veterans are 50% more likely to become homeless than other Americans due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.

  • About 1.5 million veterans are considered at-risk of homelessness. Research shows that the greatest risk factors for homelessness are lack of support and social isolation after discharge.

  • Veterans have low marriage rates and high divorce rates; and, currently, 1 in 5 veterans is living alone. Social networks are particularly important for those who are in crisis or need temporary help.

  • Nearly half a million (467,877) veterans are severely rent burdened and paying more than 50% of their income for rent.

  • More than half (55%) of veterans with severe housing cost burden fell below the poverty level and 43% receive food stamps.

YOUNG ADULTS

  • According to a National Network for Youth study, close to 1.7 million youths experience at least one night of homelessness yearly.

  • Kids become homeless mainly because of family problems, economic problems, and abductions. With no money, no home, and no ability to get either, children, teens, and young adults find themselves in a unique position when homeless, which can lead to low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.

  • According to the Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina, teens and young adults between the ages of 12 and 21 are at a far greater risk of drug abuse than those who are not homeless.

  • Approximately 24,000 teens in foster care turn 18 years old each year and are expected to move out and begin life on their own. Many are still in high school, and find themselves in need of housing, jobs, and transportation to survive

LGBTQ+  COMMUNITY

  • Due to the many hardships those in the LGBTQ+ community face daily, they already suffer from high rates of drug and alcohol abuse.

  • Members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially young adults, have a 120% higher risk of experiencing homelessness.

  • LGBTQ+ youth make up to 40% of the homeless youth population

  • 1 in 4 LGBTQ+ youth become homeless the day they come out
